Lowery came to Kansas about 1880. Hebecame the first African-American to graduate from the NewEngland Conservatory of Music. Lowery played cornet and directeda number of bands after graduation.Lowery's reputation as a musician and director was firmlyestablished by the end of World War I. When fellow Kansan MerleEvans became director of the Ringling Brothers and Barnum &Bailey Circus Band, he recruited Lowery to direct the sideshowband. Lowery led this band until 1931.Evans tried several times to transfer Lowery to the big-top band,but circus management was unwilling to challenge the dictates ofsegregation. Lowery toured with several other circuses before his1death in Cleveland, Ohio.Price of Decorah(march) was published in 1905 by the Marsh Music House. The “prince” in the titlewas B.O. Marsh, the founder of the Marsh Music House in Decorah, Iowa. Marsh was born inDecorah in 1862, graduated from the American Conservatory of Music in 1892, directed three bandsin his area, and was elected mayor of his hometown in 1932.
